The found bag of CD's I lugged home on a rainy day from Greenpoint over the summer has produced a second sale. There was quite a bit of dance music in the bag and this one is a compilation of Russian-born Disco orchestrator Boris Midney. That I got over $25 for this double was a surprise. As a casual listener it is more than you'll ever want to hear: 2 1/2 hours over 2 CD's.
Boris was known as a bit of a sound obsessive high end fiend. It makes sense that he created solo work based around not just Star Wars but the Empire Strikes Back as well. All his projects he issued under various band names, and the one that seems to stand out to me in terms of quality is USA-European Connection. The track that opens the CD, 'Come Into My Heart/Good Loving" sums it all up in 14 plus minutes: four on the floor handclaps, chicks singin', strings a stringin' and instruments including guitar solos coming in and out. The B-side of that 1978 12" "Love's Coming/Baby Love" is also compiled within.
The RSO cow rode atop the label of Music From The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. Interestingly, the A-side of the single issue "Han Solo and The Princess (Love Theme)" didn't make the cut for this release, but the B-side "The Imperial March" did. When Robert Stigwood wanted something Discofied whether Evita or Empire Strikes Back, Midney was his man.
This stuff is probably best heard in shorter doses on their original releases.
