Nothing's Shocking, the only Jane's Addiction album I really ever really liked, was one of the rare instances where a band improved after their independent record when they moved on to a major.  To me, their debut seemed thin and a little boring.  Although I haven't heard this album much beyond the late 80's, I still know every and like single song coming back to it after all these years with a couple exceptions toward the end: the horn laden "Idiots Rule."  I only saw the band a couple times one their way up, both times after this album came out.  Once in a small club and once at a big one before never seeing anything Perry Farrell fronted again, until a chance Porno For Pyros show last year before he returned to Jane's and went off the rails.

This particular CD I bought new right when it came out, sold it sometime and bought another one a year or two ago in a used lot.  For whatever reason, I tired fast of the band when Ritual De Lo Habitual came out.  It was just a little too overexposed and I didn't buy it or even see Lollapalooza despite my then Gods the Butthole Surfers and Rollins Band on the bottom of the bill.  At the end of the day, however, maybe Nothing's Shocking holds up over time better than the Butthole's Hairway To Steven or Rollins Life Time, both of which were top year-end listers for me in 1988.  I can't remember if this was.  It is a good sounding rock guitar record and one of the first major label productions to come out of the "drums are the heartbeat of the mix" sort of thinking that engulfed many an 80's production.
