I sold this on vinyl a few years back in a large order. I can't remember if this was before the start of this blog or during a period when I had more orders than days to write about different topics. In any event, my recent purchasing of 8-track box lots insured that I would get some Doobie Brothers. Sure enough, I got a fresh copy of this used bin stalwart, and it sold quickly.
These are the pre-Minute by Minute hits, which for me is the aesthetic peak of this band. I recently got a copy of The Captain and Me on recommendation and the opening two tracks on this compilation kicks off with the hits from there: "China Grove" and "Long Time Runnin'." Then you get the early Michael McDonald hits "It Keeps You Runnin'" and "Takin' It To The Streets" then the standards "Listen To The Music," "Take Me In Your Arms" and "Black Water."
The the top 40 tail off happens "Rockin' Down The Highway," "South City Midnight Lady" (gets the fade out/fade in treatment track 3 in track 4) and "Without You" are interrupted by the #35 hit Art Reynold Singers cover made "rock popular" by the Byrds, "Jesus Is Just Alright." Maybe it's technically the "best" of the rest before '76 but you'll have to dig into those albums to find out. Certainly live standards among the bands most played.
Still a good place to start.
