This is the second of a pair of Sebadoh CD's bought by the same buyer. This was another album I knew cold in it's year of release and is among the best of Lou's output along with the previous years Bubble & Scrape. In 2011 this album was expanded to a 40 track deluxe edition. One thing that made Sebadoh albums great in the mid-90's was sort of an economy of scale. Sometimes less is better. The earlier cd's tended to cram a 90 minute cassettes worth of songs into the cd length release with snippets and lo-fi tape twaddle that was superseded by the bands live show. The band calmed this down when the got to Sub Pop in 1992 and the albums sounded more focused. That's not to say upon hearing this that I felt it was a perfect record. I would've chopped a few more instead of giving the album an expansion.
"Magnet's Coil" is probably my favorite track of the 15 on this CD version, along with the previously heard "Rebound" from the 1993 UK import 4 Song CD. The hits of the lovelorn or simply worn keep on coming on this "Not A Friend," "Skull" and the song I never knew the title was "Shit Soup" or even knew the correct words of the catchy chorus. Crazy people are right on.
Crazy people are right!
