I bought a cassette lot a couple months ago and suddenly I had two cassette copies of the first Cars album. My vinyl I had used from the early 80's with giant initials magic markered on the cover had sold long before this blog in 2016 for $6.99. This tape bettered that by a couple bucks and I have another copy up for $18.99 as of this writing. Over time The Cars sell no matter the format.
Every single track except maybe "Don't Cha Stop" was a bona fide AOR hit in Massachusetts. Since this was a Boston band that is no surprise. They were hits everywhere given this album has been certified 6X Platinum for US sales alone from 1978-1995 with the first million by the end of 1978. Interestingly the Greatest Hits package that came out in 1986 has also had 6x Platinum certification through 2001, so that usurped the debut in the CD era as the generic go to for the masses. Still, this debut album plays like a Greatest Hits record.
Good Times Roll. My Best Friends Girl. Just What I Needed. You're All I've Got Tonight. Bye Bye Love. All Mixed Up. Those could all unquestionably be heard repeatedly and Moving In Stereo and I'm In Touch With Your World would make late night deep cut playlists throughout New England.
It's wicked classic.
