Generally pleasant "trip-hop" with some excellent material.  Probably up there with the best of what the genre has to offer with Portishead and Bjork.

The standout track was the Public Enemy cover of "Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos" called simply "Black Steel" here.  The song right before is where vocalist Martina Topley-Bird, on a hot streak, drinks til she's drunk and smokes til she's senseless.  "Ponderosa" that one is called.  "Strugglin'" with it's shutterbug and weird atmosphere is another good one.

Interesting guest stars abound.  Chelsea & Gene Loves Jezebel guitarist James Stevenson appears on "Brand New You're Retro."  Issac Hayes "Ike's Rap II" from Black Moses is sampled on "Hell Is Round The Corner."  Boomtown Rats bass player Pete Briquette is on "Suffocated Love" which is another standout track.

This was a massive critics record in the mid-90's that was actually worth the adulation and the album has held up over now 28 years.  Although I got a couple other Tricky releases in it's immediate wake, the first was the only one that had any listening legs for me.  Still going with When It's Going Wrong with Marta Zlakowska from last March. What happened to Martina Topley-Bird?  She was last heard from in 2021 on the self-released Forever I Wait.

What is this?  Mind your business!
