The Bob Tench era was underway after his Jeff Beck debut in 1971 on Rough and Ready.  The Jeff Beck Group has perhaps Beck's greatest song, "Going Down."  At least for me.  Cozy Powell drums and Clive Chaman from Trinidad is on the Bass.  All these guys had careers all over the place.

In many ways this sounds like a bridge to the fusion era, with instrumentals as highlights but still firmly planted in hard rock not out of place next to Zeppelin or Cream.  Befitting for a Yardbird.  It was a Steve Cropper production. Songwriters like Don Nix  or a young Ashley & Simpson team that were also utilized by Diana Ross and Dusty Springfield.  Even Stevie Wonder's mom Lula Hardaway contributed to one cover, "I've Gotta Have A Song."  Beck was serious about mining R&B.

As I said in my Tom Verlaine write-up, nothing sells records like an untimely passing.  This one went low for $3.99 as used copies were all over the place going down to a dollar at one point.  This was an ok VG copy all around.  For whatever reason this wasn't an album I listened to start to finish much, despite said good instrumentals (the aforementioned Ashford and Simpson number "I Can't Give Back The Love I Gave To You" and the closing "Definitely Maybe" gives a hint of things to come).  There is also a nice Bob: "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You."  I guess Truth was my go-to of the "heavy" era mostly because I liked his version of "Shapes Of Things" about as much as "Going Down."

This one is definitely solid.
