The follow-up to the Superfuzz Bigmuff EP was the self titled Mudhoney album. This came out before in single and German 12" form. I had both, but the 12" was worth it for the closing cover of Spacemen 3's "Revolution."
At the time I was slightly disappointed with Mudhoney, but in the way I was disappointed with Sonic Youth's Sister or Slayer's South of Heaven. A records all and so is Mudhoney. "This Gift" wasn't the problem, it is an excellent leadoff single. "Baby Help Me Forget" wasn't on the album and that's a solid memorable track from Mudhoney's peak era.
Sometimes the first years are the best.
ED NOTE: Oliver let me know that Spacemen 3's rendition of "When Tomorrow Hits" from this period is one of the greatest recordings of all time, even if somehow that 500 press boot never made in into my collection in 1990. I even plumb forgot that it made it's way to the bought/played maybe once/filed away Recurring in 1991, although I did indeed remember the cover. Everyone has their favorites!
