This was the first Melvins record I bought. My friend Jimmy, who gave me the bag of CD's that the Papa M write up came from that other day, had Gluey Porch Treatments on vinyl and played it relentlesly around the time I met him, but the record was hard to find in 1988. It wasn't until Boner Records put out the Ozma CD with Gluey added on one disc did I have it.
This single was the prelude to Ozma which I got upon release in it's all in CD configuration. These songs are all on it, probably in better recorded form. I didn't A/B it, just guessing. These are all classic hits from the early Melvins canon, and this single got heavy household play in 1989. I'm certain they played upstairs at the Middle East in 1989 or 1990, but I somehow can't find any evidence, but I know I was there a year before they played at the Rat with Cows headlining.
Many years have passed, Melvins are still around with bass players that come and go as the decades roll on. Jimmy saw them in North Carolina open up for themselves doing Black Sabbath covers around 1987, so the legend stuck with me early on.
You never forget your first Melvins.
