Sad To See It Go: No

A caterwaul that is pleasant to me in short spurts.  A little taxing at 40 minutes but the bookends of  "Stares To Nowhere" and "Afraid of Your Company" mean that you come in and go out on a high note. "Snakepit Breakdown" is classic no wave dirge I'm sure is in a Kern soundtrack somewhere. "Lock Your Door" gives us a whiff of BEATLES, "Come Together."

I've had this album a good 25+ years, and still didn't realize the backing band 13.13 shared both the title and the credit.  I always thought of this as a "Lydia Lunch" release unadorned with a backup band, and filed with the Hysterie compilation of all her previous bands headlined under her stardom.  13.13 has interesting pedigree as drummer Cliff Martinez was on Beefheart's Ice Cream For Crow as well as the Dickies, the Weirdos and even the first Red Hot Chili Peppers.  Bass guitarist Dix Denney and bass player Greg Williams were also Weirdos, but I guess Lydia Lunch & The Weirdos just wouldn't work aesthetically.

Even when I found this sealed in the new bin at Nuggets in Kenmore Square, Boston in the early 90's I knew this was a rare opportunity to pick it up dirt cheap.  This was accessible in the radio libraries I was at in Worcester and Boston, so I've been familiar with the music since a few years after the fact.  Ruby also put out the Misfits "Walk Among Us," The Gun Club "Fire of Love" and Fleshtones "A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die" so it was in good early 80's company covering excellence from both coasts.  That these records were distributed by Warner Bros. via Slash was a rare nod to the fringe of the commercial fringe and lack of overproduction  on that level.

This all-grown-up release from the apple of the Dead Boys eye has stood the test of time.  She still performs to this day and has evolved into a NYC matriarch of sorts.  

There can be beauty swimming in the "Suicide Ocean."
