I was a bit shocked that this album only sold for $4, but I guess there were quite a bit circulated. This was part of a consignment collection. I never had much of a relationship with the Boomtown Rats. My buddy John got the Ratrospective EP because it had "I Don't Like Mondays."
Bob Geldof of course starred in The Wall, the most impactful film of 1982 for both of us. We didn't think of The Boomtown Rats as a "punk" band the way this self-titled debut appears to be on the surface. The music is a cross between Generation X ("Looking Out For Number One" 60's garage rock ("Close As You'll Ever Be") and Bruce Springsteen inspired pub rock like "Joey's On The Street Again" which made the Ratrospective EP of 1983.
Somehow this didn't strike me as the best of these worlds when I listed to it a few weeks ago and streamed it again just to make sure. The songs we good, but something seemed off. Maybe even a bit fraudulent. Waters was perhaps the only one who thought the tide turned after Geldof's Live Aid. Human misery however had other ideas.
Tear down The Wall!
ED NOTE: 3/1/21 I didn't realize until flipping through the new Mojo that arrived a month late in the mail that engineer Steve Brown, who cut his chops on this album, passed at 62, about a week before this was purchased.
