From the ashes of Kursaal Flyers who had a British hit in 1976 with "Little Does She Know," formed The Records with Rhythm Guitarist/Vocalist John Wicks joining the Kursaals drummer/vocalist Will Birch along with Huw Gowar (guitarist of Magic Muscle, Dragons), Phil Brown (bass later of The Hurt) and session keyboardist Ian Gibbons (The Kinks, The Sweet). This was "faceless" British power pop made up of accomplished hands.  "New" new wave bands often weren't so new after all in the late 70's.

I've had The Records since finding a copy in a dollar bin in Boston in the late 80's.  That copy had the 4 track 7" covers EP with "Abracadabra (Have You Seen Her)"/"See My Friends" b/w "1984"/"Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadows."  Covers of Blue Ash, The Kinks, Spirit and The Rolling Stones, respectively, displaying a solid set of influences.  This copy I purchased a year or two in a $3 album lot and didn't have the 7" included.

In the UK their debut came out as Shades In Bed.  For the US market, things were toned down with the art overhauled and the title changed to simply The Records.  It created a massive one-hit, "Starry Eyes."  There are a couple songs that are great that got toploaded on the US, the opener "All Messed Up and Ready To Go" and my favorite overall "Teenarama."  The teen in question likes c-c-c-cola.

You don't need to know the brand.
