The core 60's singles of Tom Jones rank up there with the Bang Neil Diamond recordings as "best in show" for 60's AM pop for the pre-rock generation. I have a little extra appreciation for the Welsh pop star I first noticed in my grandmother's record collection. He was so "square" I didn't give him a second thought until my old friend Billy Ruane had me see him in the mid 90's with him at Irving Plaza.
At the time Tom was in rare post-comeback form having had a minor hit in 1989 with the Art of Noise doing a cover of "Kiss" by Prince. Panties were flying and lustful older woman screams were shouted. It was something to see and left me with a greater appreciation of "What's New Pussycat?," "Delilah," "She's A Lady" and of course "It's Not Unusual." Annoyingly "Delilah" is one of the songs chopped in half on this 8-track for time purposes along with "Daughter of Darkness."
All of those are here on this 1973 compilation which has since been replaced by other, more expansive compilations. Since this came out on Parrot, the label that issued these hits in the US from 1965 through 1971 while Decca had him in Europe, you could say this is a legit sampler from the era it was most popular. 12 songs fly by leaving no time for boredom that a more expansive sampler would inevitably bring.
Top dollar bin music.
