I've had many a barroom conversation about Rory Gallagher, so I was pretty happy when this came in a box of classic rock 8-tracks I won an ebay bid on last week.  Stage Struck, recorded in late '79-early '80 and released later that year, apparently is not a common 8-track.  Nobody had it for sale on Discogs so I put it up for $99.99.  This is my standard "not up on Discogs" mid-level price---sometimes I'll put it at $49.99 and sometimes $249.99 or even $499.99 depending on what it is.  For Rory, I felt the hundred-dollar level was about right.  Someone in Alaska snapped it up after I gave it a test listen yesterday and noted that it sounded great start to finish.

After going through a few 8-track players that died pretty quickly, I got a Pioneer stand-alone model heavily recommended H-R99 that is built like a tank.  I've learned the trick of putting a used tape on pause, going to track 3 and fast forwarding until the end of track 4.  If the tape survives that test, I play it all the way through.  I have a growing box of tapes that didn't survive, but apparently there is a company in Texas that will refurbish them for a reasonable price.  Usually this means replacing the broken foil looping the tape that signals a track change and replacing the foam pad that often dries out and even falls off.   Someday I'll go through the box and ship worthy ones out for repair.

This was the third live album released in Rory's lifetime.  I haven't gone through his discography, but I seem to remember Calling Card as being an album of note in the bar.  After listening to Stage Struck  a couple more times, I found it to be enjoyable revved up blues rock for a live large hall setting.  A quick glance at AllMusic pans this for being sub-rate Foghat/Bad Company (speaking of artists found in 8-track lots) and unnuanced compared to his earlier live releases Live In Europe and Irish Tour '74.  However, it was what I enjoyed about the record that the writer found "problematic."  Of course, anyone that uses the word "problematic" in a record review or in life. has no credibility with me anyway.

Don't get me started on the word "iconic."
