When I think back to my youth, the Clancy Brothers were always ripe for parody. Massachusetts has not only a huge Irish contingent, but an unparalleled Folk community that spreads to all the states that touch it. You are exposed to this music, whether you were a lad, a lassie, or a little dandy (upon review of "The Cobbler" contained within, his sister was dandy, he was ro-bo-bo-randy).
The Pogues may have made it "cool" to like traditional Irish Folk Music, but when you listen to this Clancy album Isn't It Grand Boys?, there is a certain greatness to it beyond the tracks that have been made familiar by popular culture and cover bands everywhere St. Patrick's Day and beyond. In 1966, we find the Clancy's traditional but not overly reverent and with a huge about of grit. They were at the root and that's why the Folk world loved them so much. Whiskey! Whiskey! Nancy Whiskey! Could this be where Nancy's Whiskey Bar gets it's name?:
The standard are numerous over this 27 minute album: "Galway Races," "Galway City," "My Son Ted," "Mingulay Boat Song" and of course that Cobbler. Nothing in this set of music sounds less than definitive for what it is. Since this is the first Clancy's album I've heard start to finish, I don't really have a discography feel of their many albums and this one came a decade on into their years together with 10 prior albums both studio and live and Tommy Makem only a few years away from going solo.
Good for the Cath-o-lic, the Protestant, the Jew and Presbytarian!
