In 2010 I traveled in India a couple months. There was one rock t-shirt I would see all the time around the country. Green Day's American Idiot. I always assumed people were wearing the shirt because the band played there, but they didn't until this year in Mumbai.
I pretty much ignored this album much like any other Green Day album except for the sports bar songs that get involuntarily heard while out and about. To the point I dated it in my head about 5 years after it actually came out. "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" I dislike about as much as "When I Come Around." "American Idiot" the song I actually like, although seeing all those American Idiot t-shirts in India makes me think of the song in a Punjabi accent.
After a few spins, there are a few songs that I like on this. The best is "Extraordinary Girl" which they call on their 60's British Invasion singles popsmiths. It has the feel of a good early Who song like "Circles." The song before it, "She's A Rebel" has a likable three chord punk rock by the numbers quality that channels singles of the early 90's. "Are We The Waiting" has an annoying stadium singalong anthem quality. Less tolerable are the sounds like songs like "Jesus of Suburbia" with it's David Bowie electric eye "Moonage Daydream" nick. The other one that jumped out in annoying fashion was "On With The Show" by Motley Crue.
There was a Tommy-like concept to this that shows up in song suites and ultimately a show on Broadway. I guess they thought it a punk rock opera was a good idea except it really isn't punk rock or opera. I really don't care to know what it's all about, I'm just absorbing this as a set of songs like any other Green Day album. There are a few I like, a couple I'd rather never hear again and a bunch to forget.
I think that is it for Green Day deep dives unless I get some to flip down the road.
