In the heady days of the early 90's, the mere mention of Jon Spencer was selling point enough to buy a single. There were many a person that dealt in lo-fi blues all over the place on the American indie club and bar circuit. Jack 'o Fire was Austin based. They were led by vocalist/harmonica player Walter Daniels and included guitarist Tim Kerr of the Big Boys and a gazillion other bands. Funny someone just brought up the band Cat Butt the other night and lo and behold Dean Gunderson of that band is on double bass. Drummer Joshua LaRue played in a bunch of bands including Mice Parade, HiM, The Source and The Boom.
This record covered Howlin' Wolf, Blind Willie McTell and Joy Division. The 1977 Joy Division cover is probably most interesting because they add organist Pepper Wilson. It's more common to shoehorn the legends of Blues into genre than it is to do it with a post-punk British legend like Joy Division. A horror theme of sorts and a fun theme for a single. You are never going to play it more than once or twice.
At least I didn't.
