"Put your lips on my dick/and suck my asshole too..."-Luke Campbell, "Me So Horny"
Back in it's day, even rap critics lambasted the 2 Live Crew for being too base, too dumb and all that. There was some NYC vs the South expressed by these proponents of the Miami Bass. But there was something to it. First off, "Me So Horny" was an era-defining megahit. Everybody knew "me love you long time" from Full Metal Jacket. Whoda thought it would turn into the hook of a hit single? The 2 Live Crew, that's who! Who else was gonna tell you about "The Fuck Shop" a bargain brothel for "ten dollars, two hours." Sure, there is filler on the 17-track tape. "Fraternity Records" calls out each and every Greek symbol while a guest guitarist nicks "Day Tripper." Frat boys were their main customers in 1989. Fuck 'em all!
Each member gets a conceptual side on the double vinyl. Of the 4, I'd say Brother Marquis' Side C is best track for track even though Luke's had the most hits and is the star of the group. Brother Marquis passed last year at 57. Fresh Kid Ice passed in 2017 at 53, leaving Mr. Mixx and Luke Skyywalker
This 1993 cassette I picked up was a reshuffling of the 1989 original. I knew I'd flip it on cassette from a dollar lot though not for a ton. You can't stream it legit through the group nowadays, probably because of the samples. "The Rock Stop" liberally takes "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love" by Van Halen's main riff for example. Cheech & Chong come up from the "Earache My Eye" skit. "My Seven Bizzos" has "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" by Hendrix.
Like Blowfly, this is a party record made to be stamped with an X-Rating for the 80's generation. "If you don't like it, Fuck You!" is the stated attitude. There were a couple oddities that were cool. "2 Live Blues" takes on "Mannish Boy" with some shitty lyrics. "Get The Fuck Out Of My House" kicks the deadbeat out whether girl, family or friend. Fuck is allowed in the title but "Bad ABH" abbreviates "Bad Ass Bitch" cleanly. An inside joke?
Take it and the hard ass beats you brought with you to the woods!
