As the era of the compact disc evolved, a market began to emerge for exhaustive box sets. This was an early one released in the artist's lifetime. 4 double cds in a record sized box with a fat booklet. Sprawling.
I'm listening again to this material on September 28th, the day of his passing in 1991. There are about 7 hours of music here, according to the playlists. That's quite a bit in one sitting and it took me a couple days last week to get through it first pass. Since this is the whole template of hard bop with all the important sidemen in a complete retrospective state, there is a bit of difficulty breaking it down casually as opposed to, say, listing to a single work from this period as I did with Cookin' last month. I wasn't going to have any more of an advanced critique and there wouldn't be any point. These were issued mostly as 10" records in their time. For example, the 1954 Miles Davis with Sonny Rollins 10" was 4 tracks from one session. The short form and focus has been subsumed by everything being available. Even more so in the streaming age where you don't even have to throw down money for the box set.
My standout tracks? "Love Me Or Leave Me" featuring the drums of Kenny Clarke. The others are "Swing Spring" and "Bag's Groove" with Milt Jackson's vibes.
My advice is enjoy whatever free time you have on a Sunday with 50's Miles Davis on.
