I can't fully remember what cheap bin I got this cover-trashed/decent vinyl copy of the Beck-era Yardbirds. The cover on both sides was partially pulled clean off. A copy in good shape with a drill hole went for $70, so as far as deals go, this went with a couple other similar deals. The buyer was looking for flawed high end records for cheap that could play ok. That was this.
The history of this album is extensive. In the UK it was released as Yardbirds with a completely different cover. It was later titled or known as Roger The Engineer. It was the only Yardbirds release to feature Jeff Beck on guitar on all tracks. As usual, the US (and in this case Canada, France and Germany) got shortchanged several cuts including "The Nazz Are Blue," "Rack My Mind" and "Farewell."
At least we got my favorite Yardbirds song of them all, "Over Under Sideways Down." I had Roger The Engineer reissued on CD by Elvis Costello's Edsel label by the late 80's so I never really paid too much attention to this beat up cover copy.
As for this round of listening, the standout tracks were "He's Always There," "What Do You Want" and "I Can't Make It Your Way." "Hot House of Omagarashid" sounds like a toss off side closer at first, but is it?
Ya. Ya. Ya. Ya. Ya. Ya.
