The first Dead compilation came in 1974 after the band left Warner Bros. for the short lived Grateful Dead Records experiment that lasted a few albums before tiring of that side of business.  The Warner Bros. years were the bands best, but having all the hits together with a couple live cuts and a few early classics leaves some of my favorites off the table.

Radio burnt me of "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia," "Uncle John's Band," "Casey Jones" and "Friend of the Devil," yet here they are on one record in their original studio glory.  I'm not always quick to jump on the live is better bandwagon, those albums are fine as they are.  My personal favorite, Aoxomoxoa, is represented by "St. Stephen" which makes sense here and "Rosemary" which maybe doesn't.  Same goes for the kickoff "The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)."  I like the song, and it is first track first album, but it seems out of place opening up a best of.  If you go for hits, might as well kick off with "Truckin'."

It is what it is, but there are many ways to skin a cat as time has shown us.
