In the 80's the 3rd Deep Purple had a regular appearance in the cut out bin. Since every rock fan had to have a complete Deep Purple collection at least through the Ian Gillan years, this was on the shelf of almost any serious rock fan.
Oddly enough, whether every serious rock fan actually PLAYED this more than once after purchasing it from the cutout bin before it was filed away is another story. I was surprised how the opener, "Chasing Shadows" made it's way into my brain. So did the side two opener "Why Didn't Rosemary?" Rod Evans seems to have gone into hiding and his follow up band Captain Beyond has reformed without him.
Deep Purple was known for psychedelified covers and this album has one: Donovan's “Lalena.” The drumming of Ian Paice stands out for me at various points where he comes to the fore. The 12 minute closer "April" previews Concerto For Group and Orchestra.
This one is worth some time to know.
