1972 reissue of the 1963 A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records Phil Spector compilation on the Beatles' Apple Records. The cover was revised to feature the man as Saint Nick! All the more beautiful since the original cover were with all the artists wrapped in boxes EXCEPT Phil.
There is a certain joy that the hits on this record can never be erased from permanent Yuletide celebration, but it is the also rans that make this a great album. That starts with the special message "Silent Night" outro from the man himself.
If you think about it, these set the standard for the Christmas music in the rock era and it's never been matched, for better or worse. Hal Blaine's drumming and the general thickness of these tracks make for a sonic event. Coming one after the other the songs take on their own life in a way that differs from hearing "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" in the mall or "White Christmas" at the dentists.
Phil Spector is rock 'n roll after all.
