It's heresy, but this was the start of me feeling Sub Pop were losing their way in terms of needing each and every release they put out.  Yes, Fastbacks were well reviewed in places like Maximum Rock n Roll and were around since 1979 (although they didn't start releases til 1987).  Yes, they were from Seattle and fair game for Sub Pop.  And yet, there was something brand busting that presaged Sub Pop's expansion into Portland and the world.

You can't stream the Buzzcocks cover "Whatever Happened To," but it sounds like what you'd expect Kim Warnick to sound like doing the song. To me, Blondie with a bit more grime.  At the end of the day, it's the track you have to buy the double single package for if you don't have the whole album The Question Is No.     Guitarist Kurt Block is an engineering legend, hell he even had a hand in the Robyn Hitchcock release I wrote about from the other day.  So why didn't I feel the compulsive need to back collect or buy any other Fastbacks release after I snapped this up in 1991?  This one is pleasant enough buzzsaw pop, with lovable lady vocals.  One single with "Above The Sunrise” b/w "My Letters" wound up on next years The Question Is Now full length.  The A-side of the other single, Impatience, is also on that album.

For me it sounds better on paper.
