Where and When Bought: early 80's Worcester, Strawberries cut out bin $2.99 range

Gwiz-gau Letter Grade: A+

Sad To See It Go: No

Paired with Something Else, these two late 60's Kinks albums were out of print on Reprise in the US in the early ‘80’s, so I scarfed up these both on Spain's PRT label in the cutout bin.  I knew it was a gatefold, having taken the original one out of the Worcester Public Library, so I always deemed this as a “cheap” mid-line title.

This is as good a British Rock gets, and was commercially ignored compared to their earlier records, not even charting in the US although it peaked at #47 on the British charts.  It blows ones mind that the apex of a band this important was allowed to go out of print, especially in retrospect given that it's been reissued constantly in expanded formats over the years and "Picture Book" became a TV ad 10-15 years ago.

For some reason "All Of My Friends Were There" was a big standout with the title track for me back then.  Nowadays I gravitate toward the title track and "Johnny Thunder."  But,  my favorite nowadays is the second side opener "Animal Farm."

Sometimes the better an album is, it becomes pointless to write much more about it.  Nowadays the "cheapo" cutout bin copy goes for $30-60 which seems insane, but I guess there are some people out there that want every variant.  The original UK stereo version goes for $250+ and the US gatefold $80+ so I guess this lack of sales in the 60's has increased it's desirability.

Just get a copy of it reissued already!

  1. I’d add to the review, some of most witty, hilarious lyrics in rock music.
